1. What are the goals of the conference? 

As the fourth conference in the HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention series, IAS 2007 will feature reports on the latest developments in the areas of basic, clinical and prevention science. The conference will continue its strong emphasis on treatment and pathogenesis while building upon the biomedical prevention agenda introduced in Rio de Janeiro in 2005. As a defining feature of the conference, IAS 2007 will examine how scientific advances can, in very practical ways, inform the global response to HIV/AIDS.

2. Who are the conference organizers? 

IAS 2007 is organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS) in partnership with the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM). As the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals, IAS is pleased to partner with ASHM, one of the first HIV medical societies in the world.

IAS 2007 is co-chaired by IAS President Dr. Pedro Cahn (Argentina) and by Prof. David Cooper (Australia). The Deputy Local Conference Co-Chairs are Sharon Lewin and John Kaldor.

3. How can I register for the conference? 

All registrations (for regular delegates, students/post-docs and accompanying persons) must be submitted using the online registration form. A separate online registration form for media representatives is available through the Media Center page of the website.

4. What is the cost of registration?

To encourage broad participation in the conference, organizers are offering a two-tiered fee structure, with lower registration fees for delegates from middle/ low-income countries (World Bank classification) and student/post-docs.

The registration package for regular delegates, students/post-docs, and media representatives includes entry to all conference sessions, the exhibition and poster area, the opening session, and the closing session. Conference publications, including the programme and abstract CD-ROM, are also included. The registration package for persons (age 18 and over) accompanying a regular delegate includes entry to the opening session, the welcome reception, a city tour, and the closing session. Children under 18 who are registered as an accompanying person will have access to all sessions and activities with the regular delegate they are accompanying.

5. Will, there be scholarships available, and if so, how can I apply?

In an effort to make IAS 2007 accessible to scientists and clinicians from developing countries, and to young scientists (e.g. doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows) and young clinicians globally, conference organizers have created the IAS 2007 International Scholarship Programme. Scholarship awards can be full (including registration, air travel, accommodation, and a small living allowance) or partial (one or a combination of the above). A limited number of community scholarships will be allocated to treatment and/or prevention advocates. The selection criteria for the scholarship programme will be determined by the Conference Organizing Committee. For IAS 2005, more than 1,800 scholarship applications were received and approximately 200 scholarships were awarded. We expect competition for scholarships for IAS 2007 to be even greater. Scholarship application forms and instructions are available on the Scholarships page of the conference website. The deadline for scholarship applications is 7 March 2007.

6. How do I book a hotel for my stay in Sydney?

IAS 2007 will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, Sydney. The venue is only a short walk to a number of tourist attractions and is conveniently located close to the Central Business District and many of the conference hotels. The accommodation has been reserved for delegates and exhibitors in a range of apartments and hotel rooms. 7. When and how can I submit an abstract?

Online abstract submission is open through midnight Central European Time (CET) on 7 March 2007. Abstracts will not be accepted after this date (except late breakers). Abstracts may only be submitted online via the conference website. Guidelines for submitting an abstract are also available on the website. Abstract submissions will be accepted in one of three tracks: Track A: HIV Basic Science Track B: Clinical Research, Treatment and Care Track C: Biomedical Prevention.

Descriptions of each track and lists of track committee members are available on the conference website, as is a list of categories within each track. Late breaker abstract submission will be open from 7 May to midnight Central European Time (CET) on 1 June 2007. Competition for the limited number of late breaker slots available is expected to be quite strong, and therefore only truly late-breaking research will be considered. Rule of Two: Each presenting author may present a maximum of two abstracts at the conference. There is no limit to the number of abstracts that can be submitted by one author.

8. How are abstracts reviewed and selected? 

All submitted abstracts will go through a blind, peer-review process carried out by an international review panel. Each abstract will be reviewed by no fewer than three reviewers and the final selection of abstracts will be done by members of the Scientific Programme Committee in April 2007.

9. Are there resources available to help abstract submitters?

Yes. Through the International AIDS Society’s Online Abstract Mentor Programme young and/or less experienced submitters are given the opportunity to ask questions of more experienced abstract submitters. Please note that while the Abstract Mentor Programme is designed to support less experienced researchers and strengthen the overall quality of submitted abstracts, it is completely independent of the abstract review and selection process for the conference.

10. When will decisions regarding abstracts be made?

Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent to the corresponding author by the end of April 2007. Only the corresponding author will receive mail concerning the abstract and it is that person’s responsibility to inform all co-authors. Authors whose abstracts have been accepted will receive instructions for the presentation of their abstract. The IAS 2007 programme will include three types of abstract presentations: oral abstract sessions, poster discussion sessions and poster exhibitions.

11. What are the visa and travel requirements for visitors to Australia?

All travelers to Australia, other than those from New Zealand, require a valid entry visa prior to travel to Australia. For many nationalities (29 in total) an Electronic Visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) can be obtained from your travel agent or airline when making your travel arrangements, or online at www.eta.immi.gov.au/. 12. Are there other travel requirements delegates should know about?

Arrival date: Because of the time change and jet lag the Organizing Committee suggests you consider arriving in Australia by 20 July 2007. This will enable you to relax and familiarise yourself with your hotel and its surroundings before the start of the conference. Quarantine: Australia is free from many plant and animal diseases prevalent in other countries. Very strict quarantine rules apply to the import of animals and plants, which cannot be brought into the country without prior application. Animal and plant products are also restricted. Vaccinations: A current valid international certificate of inoculation against yellow fever is required if passengers come from, or travel through, infected areas. 13. When will details regarding the conference programme become available?

In the coming months, the International AIDS Society and the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine will work through the Conference Organizing Committee and with members of the Scientific Programme Committee to identify key issues and topics for presentation at the conference. Together with abstract-driven sessions, these non-abstract driven sessions — including daily plenaries, symposia, and bridging sessions — will comprise the bulk of the IAS 2007 conference programme. The full conference programme is scheduled to be available online in June 2007, with some details (i.e. plenary speakers and some non-abstract driven sessions) announced earlier, as decisions are made. 14. Will there be exhibition opportunities at the conference?

Yes. The exhibition space at the conference will be open from Sunday, 22 July to Wednesday, 25 July 2007. An area of over 5,000 square meters of prime location gives both commercial and non-commercial organizations a unique opportunity to showcase their products, programmes, and services to a targeted audience. 15. What opportunities will there be to host a satellite meeting?

Industry-sponsored satellite meetings will take place all day on Sunday, 22 July, and in the mornings and evenings on the remaining days, Monday to Wednesday, 23-25 July 2007. These symposia are entirely organized by the Major Industry Sponsors of the conference.
