1. Focus
Over 4 million new HIV infections occur every year, most of these occur in developing countries. This session considers developments in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP) as a preventative intervention with great potential to reduce HIV transmission. In particular the discussion focuses on the operational and policy challenges to implementing PREP if proven effective.
2. Objectives
To bring together stakeholders in prevention research and policy to:
- describe the impact of an effective PREP on the global epidemiology of HIV
- consider lessons learned from roll-out of other HIV treatment and prevention programmes
- explore challenges to implementation including operational, technical, licensure and funding
- discuss the critical role of civil society in supporting PREP communication, acceptability and use
- determine directions in policy to support the implementation of PREP if proven effective
3. Format
Lecture presentations and moderated discussion
