Session description/focus:
From Africa to Asia and beyond: The next generation of private sector HIV strategies in the fight against AIDS.
In regions heavily affected by AIDS and where government capacity is limited, out of necessity, a growing number of companies have acted to manage the impact of the HIV epidemic on their businesses.
The Asia-Pacific Business Coalition on AIDS (APBCA) brings three multinational companies involved in the battle against AIDS to outline their experience delivering comprehensive workplace programs in countries where health service delivery is constrained. This session will highlight how each company is innovatively responding to HIV and AIDS in areas such as research, treatment, care and education, in the countries and regions in which they are operating.
BHP Billiton, commenced defining its South Africa HIV workplace strategy in 1993, almost a decade before the national government developed the South African national HIV strategy. BHP Billiton will provide an overview of the company’s workplace program after ten years of implementation. The presentation will highlight the company’s achievements in managing the impact of AIDS on its operations and the surrounding community, in an epidemic affecting up to 30% of the local population. The presenter will draw attention to key challenges and lessons learnt for the benefit of companies implementing workplace programs in AIDS affected regions.
adidas-Group Vietnam has been providing reproductive health education and services to employees vulnerable to HIV for over five years, leading to the creation of permanent reproductive health clinics servicing the communities in which the company operates. The company’s current and future strategy for reducing their employees’ vulnerability to HIV by delivering reproductive health services will be presented.
IBM, with operations spanning highly affected countries such as South Africa and Brazil, have been involved in the fight against HIV and AIDS since the disease became a global concern in the 1980s. An integrated approach to employee health and wellness is at the centre of IBM’s strategy for employee health promotion. IBM’s strategy for managing health issues including HIV is global; however programs are customised to address local health needs and cultures. This presentation will highlight IBM’s response to HIV care, treatment and support. Furthermore, the presenter will discuss how IBM’s World Community Grid will focus on AIDS research, to provide researchers with intensive computations necessary to help speed the discovery of effective and inexpensive therapeutics for the epidemic.
